My classmate, Jisoo!

For an assignment to draw a classmate randomly picked. Was delighted to have picked Jisoo! She is a lovely lady that creates very breathtaking work! Check it ouuuttt

Wish I was a caricature pro. Unfortunately I think I got her neck and face a tad too long. Jisoo is very kind, and her aura is very serene and strong to me (just like her artwork!). Also, she always seems to have an abundance of tasty snacks on hand.

Oops...been a while!

Every winter break I fall pray to the "I'll update my blog laaaaater" disease...

Well, to try to start back up again, here is an update with some of my new years resolutions. I've broken them up into 3 short-term resolutions and 3 long-term resolutions.

SHORT TERM RESOLUTIONS:

resolutions that should get done sooner rather than later

#1: DRAW MORE

#2: BE PRODUCTIVE

I can see that we're off to a good start here.

#3: EAT SLOWER

Ok, seriously, this has been my resolution for two years in a row now. I'm gonna do it this time. I'M GONNA DO IT

Return of Gastelbrau

Assignment for story class was to "Tell a Joke" - two characters max, b&w, no dialogue. This assignment just proved to show me exactly how unfunny I am because for the whole week I could not think of ANYTHING!
So in the end I did a joke I thought of last year for my animation, but didn't end up using. (Though I guess this scene would technically take place afterwards, since he has both of his teeth there)

Are there any diabetic/hypoglycemics out there that experience the pain I feel??
I'm talking about the pain of about a lb of carrot sticks in my stomach right now.

Breakfast started out real classy. Berry skyr with a few blackberries and flax seed thrown in there.

I'm breaking in my new bike, so I rode down to whole foods and treated myself to some multigrain sushi (which was aawWWeeesoOOme)

Yes, well...I'm not used to riding on these California hills and I guess that bike ride was more strenuous than I thought, because my bloodsugar had dropped down to 48 by 3:00, and low blood sugars turn me into a ravenous food beast (like a werewolf, except replace the full moon with glucose deffecient blood.....I guess...?)

In about 5 seconds flat my stomach contained the following:

3 bags of pirate booty
3 spoonfuls of apricot preserves
3 celery sticks dipped in zucchini ikra
entire 15 oz bag of carrot sticks

WELL....at least I can console myself that it was pretty much healthy food! (Pirate booty is questionable...)

Well, tomorrow I am headed back to school for my third year at CalArts. That freeeaaaaks me out. I don't feel like a Junior at all!

I can't say that I drew a whole lot this summer unfortunately...but what I can say is I LOVE KETTLEBELL! I tend to feel about working out/exercising the same way I also feel about showering: I feel like a million bucks once I'm done, but the whole process itself just feels like a big invasion of my time and I can't wait for it to be over. Not so with kettlebell!!! I look forward to my sumo squats and turkish get up sit ups every day! (Maybe if I do kettlebell in the shower I will enjoy showering more too?)

My godmother (you may remember her) gave me her old kettlebell and 25 min DVD and OOOH MAN it's so much fun to swing that thing around (unlike running, where I find myself praying for death to take me). So turns out it was developed in Russia where it is called girya which sounds a million times cooler than kettlebell.

only 25 mins and I feel the burn!!

Note the impressive pink seven pounder right there (apparently women are supposed to START OUT with 15 lbs...maybe that's only for Russian women. That must be it)

Return from Romania

Flew back in to the states this last Saturday from my second trip to Romania.

Oh man...it was soooOOOO GREAT!!! I just can't say enough HOW THANKFUL I am that I was able to go. I love Romania! Everything was even more lovely than I remember it. I had such a blast spending time with my friends at the churches there, getting to walk around the funny little town of Pucioasa and seeing all the little kids coming in off the street to see the weird Americans doing VBS! Not to mention just being there and soaking up the simple and happy lifestyle of our brothers and sisters there was such a refreshment...I didn't want to come back!! ):

If anyone is interested here is a blog that documents the happenings of each day of our trip (including fun times like getting ferociously carsick going through the winding roads of the mountains as well as my sister and I not waking up to our alarm and losing our hotel keys haha...oops)

My partners in crime and I dressed up as Romanian Christian historical figures as part of our VBS program one day. From L to R: Vasile Voiculescu, Ioan Alexandru, Dumitru Cornilescu. Those names are pretty fun to say out loud. (I'm also pretty sure we look absolutely nothing like these people even in the slightest bit)

My TREASURE!!!! After eating lunch at sister Mariana's house she gave me a big bag full of the reddest, juiciest tomatoes I've ever eaten, picked straight up out of her garden (not to mention another bag full of the crispest most delicious cucumbers I've ever eaten). I ate those bad boys like apples! They really make watery pink american tomatoes look awful.

Check this dude out in the pink. We spotted him SEVERAL times walking around town during our trip--always in the same outfit. (I told Isabelle to pretend like I was taking a picture of her...)

I didn't draw near as much as I would have liked to. I felt like sketching all the time because I was constantly surrounded by awesome looking people and scenery! Here's some pages from my sketchbook in any case

I can tell Romanian food is PACKED FULL of nutrients and protein; in ten days my nails had grown suuuuuuuper strong and long SUPER fast. (Of course I also feel like I gained about ten pounds...what kind of missionary trip has people eating so much good food all the time?!)

Anyway, God willing, I will be able to go back again next year! It has grown to be such a dear place with such dear people to me. I'm sad because I know I'm going to forget all the Romanian words I picked up in about a week ): oh well

This summer so far hasn't been what I thought it would be at all...I thought by now I'd be kickin' back every day with frozen yogurt, drawing up a storm and blogging all the time... however, ever since I've gotten home I've been COMPLETELY creatively unmotivated and frustrated. My family is going through a season of many distressing changes. It's been challenging and to be honest I've been struggling with feeling really defeated.

I can't recall if I ever talked about it much on my blog or not, but my animation Vampire Gastelbrau was inspired by a ten-day trip to Romania I went on last summer. It was a missionary trip with a team of good friends from my church, Harvest Bible Church. It was SO amazing, SO fun! We did a VBS program for the kids there. The ONLY reason I was able to go is because some one anonymously paid for my ticket!! I am so so so so SO thankful God had provided a way for me to go last year. I just fell in love with everything about Romania and Romanians. Most of all it was really extraordinary to see the humble, happy, God-and-people-serving lives our dear friends there lived. It really made my life in America seem busy, cold, and selfish.

I wanted to go again this year, but for a couple of reasons I couldn't: first of all, I just didn't have the money. Even if I did, I had no idea how to predict what my summer looked like. I applied for some internships so I didn't want to make other plans...(well, turns out I didn't get any bites)

So with my summer wide open I mope around watching my sister preparing to go to Romania without me (she was able to raise enough money), washing dishes, grocery shopping, waiting for some kind of motivation to draw something, and becoming unhealthily obsessed with Just Dance 2 (I am pretty kick butt at Rasputin if I do say so myself)

Yesterday, I get a phone call saying I've been provided with a ticket to Romania.

Next week.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I WILL BE IN ROMANIA AGAIN NEXT WEEK!!!! I will be hugging my Romanian friends and singing with little Romanian gypsy children and eating delicious tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes!!! Again, I am just SO SO SO thankful for the way God leads and provides so many blessings for me even though I am a sulking doubtful whiney baby. I'm just floored. I'm so happy. I'm so thankful. I can't wait!!!!!

Joy of the Mundane episode II: Grocery Shopping

Oooooh man
Grocery shopping is really the best
just the best.

Within the past couple of years I have become what you might call a health nut...the thoughts that most occupy my mind are daydreams of going to farmers markets and organic food stores, getting to take my sweet, sweet time checking out nutritional facts, fantasizing about the endless combinations of ways to make oatmeal exciting...

And fortunately, I have a grocery-shop-love partner, Jane Kim! Today we walked down to Sprouts Farmers Market together.

I freak out every time I go to Sprouts.

I recently discovered skyr, which is icelandic strained non-fat yogurt. Jane and I decided to have a cup. She bought some coconut toasted granola, and I brought along a couple boxes of raisins, so we added those in.

FINALLY!!!

This is my final project for my graphic novel development class...the one I took LAST semester. As it came time to work on my project my pronator syndrome decided to rear it's ugly head, making me unable to draw.... My teacher graciously gave me a grade of incomplete and said to just finish it when I could--so I've been working on it while in the middle of recovering from pronator/surgery, not to mention in the middle of scrambling to work on my animation!

Anyway...here it is! I think the less I say about it the better, because to be honest I'm quite unhappy with the story..... (it was a little trying to develop a story for my comic simultaneously working on the story for my animation), also unhappy with the character designs, not as polished as I'd like.........let's not even talk about BGs.....

Ok, I will just stop before I completely destroy this with my own critique.

Diabetes

Diabetes has given me thick skin!
I had a nerve test done over winter break on my arm to figure out if I had CTS (and it turned out I had Pronator Syndrome instead!) and the doctor stuck a big ol' needle in my arm over and over (and over...and over...). He said, "Have you been diabetic for a long time? I can tell...your skin is like puncturing a grapefruit. Most people are like tangerines."
Huh!

BAD NEWS: for the last couple of weeks, this is what my life has looked like (drawn with my opposite hand...I've been practicing!)

Making may animatic while battling stymptoms of what may be CTS. SO. FRUSTRATING.

GOOD NEWS: Tomorrow I am going home for winter break!! YAY!

BAD NEWS: because of my stupid hand I wasn't able to complete my final project (10 page comic) for my graphic novel class. Now I'll have to work on it over break, provided my hand gets fixed up.... AUUUGH

Here are some drawings to theme of googie inhabitants--in other words some 50's inspired folks. I don't really feel like I got to explore it as much as I wanted to, and I'm still not entirely happy with these designs...but it was fun

Some 50's punks and their girlfriends (kind of). The redhead acts tough but he likes kind girls. Tall guy's girl is a smart cookie. No one really knows what she sees in him, since he's kind of dim. Fat guy thinks the blonde woman is madly in love with him. He is quite wrong.

Here is a sculpture I made of the character I'll be using for my first year film (maybe). His name is Colossus (Collie for short), and he's a lion cub. Whenever I show him to some one it's always, "What IS that? A gopher? A dog?"

These next two were for my story class. One assignment was to make 15-20 silhouettes from a theme, so I chose the theme underwater. The other assignment was to make a character model sheet--I made a little girl whose design is based off of a telescope eye goldfish.
